Cycling Brake Pads: When to Replace and How to Choose
I replaced my brake pads on a rainy Tuesday and found the friction material was down to 0.5mm — barely more than the steel backing plate. Had I ridden that brake for another 200 miles, the metal-on-metal contact would have scored my rim beyond repair and cost me $200 for a new carbon wheel. Brake pads are the cheapest safety component on your bike and the one most riders neglect until it’s too late.
Quality brake pads cost $8-25 per pair. New brake rotors cost $40-80 each. New carbon rims cost $200-600 each. The math is simple: replace your pads every 1,000-3,000 miles depending on conditions, and you’ll never face a catastrophic brake failure.
Rim Brakes vs Disc Brakes: Pad Differences
Rim brake pads press against the wheel rim to slow you down. They come in two compounds: standard (good stopping power, wears faster) and performance (slightly less initial bite, longer life). Standard pads last 1,000-2,000 miles. Performance pads last 2,000-3,000 miles.
Disc brake pads clamp a rotor mounted to the hub. They’re divided into resin (softer, quieter, less powerful) and sintered metal (harder, louder, more powerful, longer-lasting). Resin pads last 2,000-4,000 miles. Sintered pads last 4,000-8,000 miles but can overheat on long descents.
Best Rim Brake Pads
Standard: Shimano BH59 — $8/pair, 1,500 mile lifespan. The industry workhorse. Fits almost every Shimano and compatible rim brake caliper. I’ve used these on commuter bikes for 5 years and they’re consistent, reliable, and cheap enough to replace without thinking.
Performance: Jagwire Modula — $15/pair, 2,500 mile lifespan. Better wet-weather performance than Shimano BH59. The resin compound maintains bite in rain where standard pads glaze over. Worth the $7 premium if you ride in wet conditions.
Premium: Hope Pro 4 Ceramic — $25/pair, 3,000 mile lifespan. Ceramic-coated pads that resist glazing and maintain consistent performance in all conditions. Overkill for most riders but exceptional for mountain biking where brake fade on descents is a real concern.
Best Disc Brake Pads
Resin: Shimano SM-RT7 — $12/pair, 3,000 mile lifespan. Quiet, powerful, and compatible with virtually every Shimano and Magura disc brake system. The go-to pad for road disc bikes.
Sintered: Avid/Formula Sintered — $18/pair, 5,000 mile lifespan. For riders who tackle steep descents regularly. The sintered metal compound resists fade at high temperatures but requires a bedding-in period of 50-100 hard stops to reach peak performance.
When to Replace: The 2mm Rule
Replace brake pads when the friction material reaches 2mm thickness. Most new pads start at 4-5mm. You can measure this visually — most pads have a wear indicator groove that disappears when pads are worn. If you can’t see a groove, the pads are at or below 2mm.
Replace immediately if you notice: squealing (glazed pads), reduced stopping power (worn pads), metal-on-metal grinding (critical — stop riding now), or uneven wear (pads aren’t seating correctly on the rim/rotor).
Here’s My Take
Shimano pads are the best value at every price point. For rim brakes, get the BH59 ($8) for commuting and the Modula ($15) for performance riding. For disc brakes, the SM-RT7 resin ($12) covers 90% of use cases. Upgrade to sintered only if you ride steep mountain descents regularly. Check pad thickness every 500 miles — it takes 30 seconds and could save you from a crash.
