When and How to Replace Bicycle Brake Pads: Complete Guide
I rode with worn brake pads for 600 miles after the wear indicator groove disappeared, and the metal backing plate scored my rotor to the point where it vibrated at speed. The $8 brake pad replacement I should have done 600 miles earlier turned into a $35 rotor replacement plus the labor time to remove, glue, and bed in the new rotor. Brake pad inspection takes 30 seconds and prevents catastrophic braking failure.

How to Tell When Your Brake Pads Need Replacement
Rim brake pads have a groove molded into the rubber surface. When this groove disappears, the pad is at minimum thickness and must be replaced immediately. Most rim brake pads last 1,000 to 3,000 miles depending on riding style. Downhill riders and heavy loaded touring cyclists wear pads 40 percent faster than flat-terrain commuters.
Disc brake pads have a metal wear indicator tab that squeaks or scrapes against the rotor when the pad material reaches minimum thickness. Replace disc brake pads when you hear this squeal. Organic resin pads last 2,000 to 4,000 miles. Sintered metal pads last 4,000 to 8,000 miles but bite harder and wear rotors faster. Check pad thickness visually โ if the friction material is less than 1 millimeter thick, replace immediately.
How to Replace Rim Brake Pads
Most rim brakes use a quick-release mechanism: flip the lever, slide the old pad out, and insert the new pad with the arrow on the side pointing toward the wheel rotation direction. Some older rim brakes use a retaining bolt that requires a 5mm hex key. Remove the bolt, slide off the old pad, insert the new one, and tighten the bolt finger-tight plus 1/4 turn.
Position the pad so it contacts the rim braking surface squarely, not on the tire or the rim lip. The front edge of the pad should contact the rim slightly before the rear edge to prevent the pad from being thrown forward during hard braking. Tighten the retaining mechanism and squeeze the brake lever several times to seat the pad against the rim.
How to Replace Disc Brake Pads
Shimano disc brakes use a spring-loaded pin that holds the pad retainer in place. Remove the pin with a 2mm hex key, slide out the old pad carrier, insert the new one, and reinsert the pin. SRAM brakes use a similar system but require pressing the piston back into the caliper before installing new pads because the pistons spread to accommodate the new thicker pads.
After installing new disc brake pads, you must bed them in: ride at moderate speed (15 to 20 mph) and apply firm brake pressure to slow to 8 mph without stopping. Repeat 10 to 15 times until you feel consistent braking force. This transfers pad material evenly onto the rotor surface and maximizes braking power. Skipping the bed-in process leaves you with 30 to 50 percent reduced braking power for the first 100 miles.
Choosing the Right Brake Pad Compound
Organic/Resin pads: Quieter, better initial bite, easier on rotors. Best for road bikes, commuting, and dry conditions. Last 2,000 to 4,000 miles.
Sintered/Metal pads: More powerful braking, better heat dissipation, louder operation. Best for downhill mountain biking, wet conditions, and heavy riders. Last 4,000 to 8,000 miles but wear rotors faster.
Half-metal/half-organic: Compromise pads offering decent bite with moderate rotor wear. Best for all-around use when you ride in mixed conditions. Kool-Stop Salmon pads ($8/pair) are the industry standard for this category.

Check brake pad thickness before every long ride โ it takes 10 seconds and could save your life. Replace pads as soon as the wear indicator disappears, not when braking feels noticeably worse. Brake performance degrades gradually, and by the time you notice a problem, you may already be riding on metal-on-metal surfaces that damage your rims or rotors. Bed in every new pad installation properly โ the 10 minutes spent on bed-in procedures pays for itself in improved braking confidence and longer pad life.
