Cycling Reflective Vest: Night Riding Safety Essentials

I rode home in the dark last November wearing a black jacket and black pants. A delivery van turned the corner at 25 mph and saw me at 120 feet — too late to stop. I jumped into a ditch. How Reflective Materials Work

Reflective vests use either glass bead retroreflection or prismatic retroreflection. Racing: The Castelli Route 35 at $120 is the UCI-legal choice. It’s not just reflective — it’s a full wind vest that blocks 95% of wind chill at speeds above 20 mph. The 3M Scotchlite strips are positioned to maximize visibility from all angles. Used by pro teams like Jumbo-Visma and Ineos Grenadiers.

Budget: The TACVASEN Reflective Cycling Vest at $16 on Amazon has 360-degree silver reflective strips and mesh ventilation panels. It won’t last more than 2-3 seasons of regular use, but for the price, it’s the best entry-level option. I bought one for my nephew and one for my dad — both wear them religiously on evening rides.

Reflective Vest + Lights = Non-Negotiable

Reflective gear alone is insufficient for night riding. It only works when headlights illuminate it. In areas without street lighting, or when a driver’s headlights are aimed low, reflection is minimal. Always pair a reflective vest with at least one front light (500+ lumens) and one rear light (100+ lumens).

But whatever you buy, pair it with actual lights. Reflection is passive safety — it only works when someone shines light on you. Active safety (lights) works regardless of ambient conditions. Use both.
