Electric Bike Commuting: Battery, Range and Real Cost

An e-bike does not replace a bike; it replaces a car trip. The decision is made by three numbers: how much battery you need for the round trip, how long it takes to charge, and what it costs per kilometre against the alternative.

Battery capacity

Capacity_wh Range_km (real) Typical bike
300–400 30–50 City e-bike, light rider
400–500 40–70 Commuter, mid-drive
500–625 60–90 Long commute, cargo
625–750 80–110 Cargo, hilly terrain
900+ (dual) 120+ Touring, heavy load

Manufacturer range claims assume the lowest assist level, a light rider, and flat ground. Real commuting — stop-start traffic, hills, cold weather, a loaded pannier — reduces range by 30–40%. Plan on the real figure, not the sticker.

Assist speed

Class / region assist_speed_kmh Notes
Europe (EN 15194) 25 Motor cuts out above 25
UK 25 Same, plus throttle restrictions
USA Class 1 32 Pedal assist only
USA Class 2 32 Throttle allowed
USA Class 3 45 Helmet and age limits in some states
Speed pedelec (EU) 45 Registration, insurance, helmet

The assist cut-off is the number that decides commute time. On a 10 km commute, 25 km/h assist gives about 28 minutes; 45 km/h gives 18 — the difference between a viable commute and a long one.

Charging

Battery Charger charge_time_h
400 Wh 2 A 5–6
500 Wh 2 A 6–7
500 Wh 4 A 3–4
625 Wh 4 A 4–5

A removable battery is the practical requirement for commuting: charge it at your desk, not from a socket in a car park. Charging to 80% for daily use roughly doubles pack life compared with always charging to 100%.

Charging in practice

A 2 A charger takes 5–6 hours to refill a 400 Wh pack and 6–7 hours for 500 Wh. A 4 A charger roughly halves that: 3–4 hours for 500 Wh, which is the difference between charging at work and charging overnight only.

If your commute consumes more than 50% of the pack each way, buy the faster charger. Waiting six hours for a full charge is fine at home and useless at a desk where you have eight hours minus lunch.

Running cost per kilometre

Item Cost
Electricity (500 Wh pack, 80% efficiency) $0.10–0.20 per full charge
Cost per km, electricity only $0.002–0.005
Battery replacement (500 cycles) $0.10–0.20 per km
Maintenance (brakes, tyres, chain) $0.05–0.10 per km
Total $0.15–0.30/km

Against a car at $0.50–0.70 per kilometre, a 20 km round trip saves $7–12 a day. The battery is the largest single cost and the one riders forget: a $500–800 pack lasting 4–5 years works out at $100–200 a year.

Motor types

Type Feel Best for
Mid-drive (crank) Natural, uses gears Hills, sporty riding, cargo
Rear hub Simple, cheaper Flat city commuting
Front hub Feels like being pushed Rare, budget bikes
Rear hub with torque sensor Smooth Mid-range commuters

Mid-drive motors use the bike’s gears, so they climb well with a load and feel like riding with stronger legs. Hub motors are simpler and cheaper but lose efficiency on steep hills.

Choosing by commute

Commute Battery Motor
5 km, flat 300–400 Wh Hub
10 km, mixed 400–500 Wh Mid-drive
15–20 km, hills 500–625 Wh Mid-drive
25 km+ or cargo 625–750 Wh Mid-drive, dual battery

If the round trip is more than 60% of real range, buy one size up. Range anxiety on an e-bike is not about running out — it is about riding in the lowest assist mode to preserve battery, which defeats the purpose.

Cold weather and battery life

Lithium packs lose 20–30% of usable capacity below 5 °C. Store the battery indoors, fit it warm, and expect winter range to drop by a third. Charging a frozen pack damages it; let it reach room temperature first.

A pack is typically rated for 500 full cycles. Charging 80% daily rather than 100% can extend that to 800–1,000 equivalent cycles — roughly two extra years of commuting.

What to check before buying

Check Why
Removable battery Charging at a desk or flat
Real range at your assist level Test ride, not brochure
Torque sensor vs cadence sensor Feels natural vs on/off
Motor cut-off speed Decides commute time
Warranty on motor and battery 2 years minimum
Weight 20–27 kg; stairs matter
