How to Adjust Your Bicycle Derailleur: Front and Rear Guide
I spent $45 at a bike shop for a derailleur adjustment that cost me zero minutes of my time and required a $15 hex key set I already owned. Derailleur adjustment is the most commonly overpaid-for service at bike shops, yet it is also one of the easiest maintenance tasks to master at home.

Understanding Derailleur Limit Screws: H and L Explained
Every derailleur has two limit screws labeled H (high) and L (low). The H screw controls how far the derailleur moves toward the smallest cog (highest gear). The L screw controls how far it moves toward the largest cog (lowest gear). These screws prevent the chain from dropping off the cassette entirely, which can damage your frame, derailleur hanger, and potentially cause a crash.
To adjust the L screw: shift to the largest rear cog and smallest chainring. Pedal and observe where the derailleur cage aligns with the largest cog. The cage pulley should be directly beneath the largest cog, not pushed outward. If the chain drops off the largest cog inward toward the spokes, tighten the L screw clockwise in quarter-turn increments. If the chain refuses to shift onto the largest cog, loosen the L screw (counter-clockwise).
To adjust the H screw: shift to the smallest rear cog and largest chainring. The cage pulley should align directly beneath the smallest cog. If the chain drops off the smallest cog outward, tighten the H screw. If the chain refuses to shift to the smallest cog, loosen the H screw. Both adjustments follow the same principle: the derailleur cage should never extend beyond the outermost cogs.
How to Index Your Derailleur Using the Barrel Adjuster
After setting limit screws, cable tension determines shift precision. The barrel adjuster on your derailleur or brake lever controls cable tension in 1/4-turn increments. Turn it counter-clockwise to increase tension (makes the derailleur shift toward larger cogs). Turn it clockwise to decrease tension (shifts toward smaller cogs).
Indexing procedure: shift to the middle cog. Pedal and shift up one cog at a time. If the shift is slow or noisy, turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise in 1/4-turn increments until the shift is crisp and instant. Then shift down one cog at a time. If downshifts are slow, turn the barrel adjuster clockwise. Repeat until both upshifts and downshifts are instant and quiet. Front Derailleur Adjustment Steps
Front derailleur adjustment is simpler but equally important. Mount the derailleur bracket around your seat tube at the correct height (2 to 3 millimeters above the largest chainring teeth). Align the outer cage plate parallel to the chainring. Set the L limit screw so the inner cage plate sits 1 to 3 millimeters from the chain when on the smallest chainring. Set the H limit screw so the outer cage plate sits 1 to 3 millimeters from the chain when on the largest chainring.
Route the cable and pull it tight with pliers (not your fingers โ fingers cannot generate sufficient tension). Trim the cable end and secure the anchor bolt. Shift through all gear combinations and fine-tune with the barrel adjuster if needed. Front shifts should be crisp from small-to-large and large-to-small chainrings. When Cable Replacement Is Necessary
Shift cables stretch over time and corrode internally, causing increasingly imprecise shifting even after barrel adjuster tweaks. Replace cables every 2,000 miles or when you notice rust, fraying, or stiffness along the cable housing. Inner cables cost $3 to $8. Housing costs $1 per foot. Cable cutters cost $15.
